The procession begins at the Wasukri pier at 16.00 hr, when His Majesty the King travels along the Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) on the occasion of presenting robes to Buddhist monks (Royal Kathin Ceremony). Rhythmic barge-rowing songs are part of this ceremonial water-borne procession, which is a rare spectacle, arranged on special occasions only. The royal processions, both by land and by water, exhibit the glory and great power of the monarch, in accordance with the traditional beliefs and court traditions handed down through generations. They also mark the conclusion of the Royal Coronation Ceremony, which is considered one of the most important events for all Thai kings.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS AND CLOSURES:?This is everything that we know so far

  • Monday 6th May 2019 has been declared a special?holiday in order for the public to join the celebrations in Bangkok. A similar holiday was declared during the cremation of King Rama IX.
  • The Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will most certainly be closed from 4th-6th May 2019 due to ceremonies for the coronation. However, it is also quite likely that the palace will be closed at least a week in advance for preparations. In the lead up to the cremation of King Rama IX, the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha was closed for a whole month.
  • In the future, 4th May will be a public holiday every year for Coronation Day (‘Wan Chattra Mongkhon’).
  • It is most likely that all shops and tourist attractions will be open as normal during this period. During the cremation ceremony of King Rama IX, many places closed their doors for the day. But that was out of respect for the late King. It is unlikely they will do the same during the coronation. However, government-run attractions, like the national museums and royal palaces, will most certainly be closed that weekend. Anyway, they normally close on a Monday.

Are foreigners allowed to participate in the ceremonies? And join the crowds in the streets during the Royal Procession? Will the entire Royal Family be in the procession?

For the Coronation Ceremony itself, it is likely that the representatives of foreign countries (read: those diplomats from the Embassies and Consul Generals) would be invited guests for ceremony.

Some main roads around Bangkok will be closed off , which will cause traffic delays , So if You need to be somewhere special ” Go Early ” I have no doubt this will be a world event and a sight to see . At this time I cant say which point would be the best advantage , Thousands will line the streets and after sun down stay in a safe place . The celebrations will no doubt go beyond 6 th. May and many colorful people will be attracted , So make sure You camera is fully working , Not only Bangkok will celebrate But other provence and towns around Thailand , If You have never been to a coronation ?? This will be a once in a life-time event . I wish Him a long and Happy reign . LONG LIVE the KING

If you’re in the Don Mueang – Rangsit area, there are free shuttle buses to Sanam Luang (which is the large grassy area near the Grand Palace and across from the Bangkok National Museum, for those less familiar with the city), and presumably back from Sanam Luang, too, since I was told they will be running until “twelve o’clock at night.” They will be operating Sunday morning “by 6 a.m.” from the Future Park (shopping mall) bus stop (and are already running Saturday night). The public bus service and tourist information office representatives at Don Mueang Airport were unsure about services from there to Sanam Luang on Sunday; the latter recommended the Future Park service.
